Norhill Sponsors DePelchin Christmas Party
and DePelchin Families...

DePelchin has been serving children and families since 1892 with programs including adoption, foster care, counseling services, post-adoption, transitional living services, among many others programs.

The Norhill neighborhood, Friends of Proctor Plaza, and Proctor Plaza Association would like to sponsor at least 2 families from Depelchin this Christmas. We will also be throwing a small party for about 20 children from DePelchin at Proctor Park. The party will be a private DePelchin party.

If you are interested in donated some new toys or new clothes to these 2 families please contact Pam Foote at Proctor Plaza at 713-862-6907.

If you would like to drop off board games and toys the kids at DePelchin would enjoy...please feel free to do so with Mrs Pam.

Or if you would like to make a small donation for treats, etc. for their Christmas party please contact:

PAC Plans for the Future...

..
The Park Advisory Committee (PAC) has been thinking and planning about upcoming events as well as some updates we are looking into for Proctor Plaza.

Here are some ideas we have...let us know if you are interested in helping the PAC realize these ideas and activities.

Please suggest to us any ideas you may have for our park and activities you might think our neighborhood and community would enjoy.

POSSIBLE UPCOMING ACTIVITIES -

W
e have the ability to continue growing into a really amazing community, even more so than we are now. Can you imagine Live Music Nights at Proctor. Kind of like what we did for the Fall Festival with people and the security that was provided, while listening and dancing to really cool live music!

We would also like to ask the Parks and Recreation and corporate/local donors for a projector and screen for Movie Nights at the park. We could bring our blankets, popcorn, favorite soda pop and watch a fun movie together.

Also can you imagine running OR walking, for those of you who like to have a more "detailed" look at the scenery, together with your neighbors at Norhill's Friends of Proctor Plaza Neighborhood 5k Run/Walk. How fun to see all of our neighbors out there having a good time together. Can you imagine what this would do for our neighborhood? It would do so many great things. It would all have to be carefully planned and funded.

We are willing to make it happen....are you?

These activities are only possible if neighbors VOLUNTEER and donate monetarily. We can figure out how to get these things donated, but the community has to be involved and motivated to make it happen.

We are also looking to have donated: new landscaping for the park. Some pretty bushes, flowers and plants for those of you who like to walk yourselves and/or your dogs. Possibly turning the dirt in the baseball field...it's as solid as a rock almost.

We would love to have donated a couple of new playground pieces to the old repertoire for the kids.

Maybe some kiddie hoops under the plaza such as this one...

What would also be fun? HEB donated to Montie Park, the park across Main Street in the Brookesmith neighborhood, a small water playground for the kids. We have been a couple of times and it's really fun. There were people and kids enjoying themselves.

Wouldn't that be fun for the kids in this neighborhood? We could have that at Proctor. The city of Houston has several water playgrounds around the area.

Provided by the City of Houston website: "The Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s water playgrounds provide an engaging and interactive fun activity year-round for children, especially during the hot summer months. Water playgrounds have distinct advantages over swimming pools in that they are cost effective, low maintenance, and water-play activities extend well beyond normal pool season. Water playgrounds are controlled using a timer and touch-sensor. The timer is set for 12 hours of water activation, and the touch-sensor turns on the water for a two to three minute cycle."

Adult supervision recommended. No lifeguards are on duty.

Can you imagine how much safe, simple fun we could have in our little community.

Would you like to be a part of these exciting ideas?
...
Then please consider donating your time and resources to our neighborhoods future....

Do you have any suggestions or comments? Let us hear from you!

We are looking forward to being one of the best urban neighborhoods in the nation.

Kids Safety and Fingerprint Kits

The Houston Police Department will be at Proctor Plaza to get your child's fingerprints. You will have these records for the protection of your child. The police use fingerprints to help bring missing children home, and police departments across the country recommend that parents keep records of their children’s fingerprints along with certain other information.

Please contact Pam Foote at 713-862-6907 for further details.

Thank you neighbors!

--------------------------------

Preparing a Fingerprint Kit:
http://www.essortment.com/family/childfingerprin_sivx.htm#

Any fingerprint kit should include more than just a fingerprint record. Most importantly, it should have space where you can keep a recent photo of your child; this photo should clearly show your child’s facial features. There should also be space to record identifying information about your child, such as distinguishing marks, medical history, and your child’s description.

In addition to recording fingerprints, the kit should offer a way to keep a sample of your child’s DNA. Many commercial kits include a cheek swab with a container to store it, but this kind of DNA sample is not necessary. Instead, the kits distributed by police departments usually direct parents to save a sample of their child’s hair. The hair strands saved must include the follicle, or root (this will appear as a small lump at the end of the hair), and can be pulled from your child’s hairbrush. Enclose the hair in a clean white piece of paper, then place the folded paper in a plastic bag and keep it with the kit.

Finally, there should be space where you can note down the medical offices which have your child’s full medical and dental records, should these be needed by police.

Once you have assembled the kit, maintaining it is important. As mentioned above, fingerprints of young children will need to be repeated when they are older. The photograph kept with the records should also be updated quite frequently, two or three times a year. Each new photo should be of good quality, not distorted or fuzzy. Every time you update the photo, check over the information recorded in the kit and update it if anything has changed. Keep the kit in a safe place, but make sure it will be accessible in the event of an emergency.

Have a great day!

It's definitely the time to be outdoors here in Texas.

We have been gone since before Easter and didn't get to tell everyone Happy Easter. Hope everyone had a relaxing weekend.

We are working on getting the tennis courts lights on at night again. The lights have been out since there was a big light fuse blow out at the park a month ago. The park is working on that. Notice the baseball lights have been on Monday's and Wednesday's....baseball season - play ball!

There have been so many people out and about.

Get to know your neighbors and keep enjoying the weather while ya can!

Monday, March 17, 2008

Spring Forward...

We hope everyone has an enjoyable Spring Break this week - or when ever yours is, if you get one this month.

There will NOT be an official activity at the park for this Wednesday Play Date at 11:00 a.m. because of spring break. But please enjoy the park and friends at the park any time! Mrs. Pam will be there after noon so there should be access to the restrooms and water fountain inside.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Egg Hunt. I'm not sure what the count is yet but we had at least a couple hundred or more people there. We had a fun time! The kids kept busy with face-paint, a big parachute, musical chairs, dancing, snow cones and playing with friends.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered in some way....especially the teen volunteers who did a lot of helping on Saturday during the event. We have great friends, a great neighborhood, and a great park.

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Welcome Friends!

There are always plenty of fun things going on a Proctor Plaza. Some of the kids right now are taking free tennis lessons at Proctor every Monday and Wednesday afternoons at 4:15 p.m.

Baseball and t-ball will be coming up along with soccer. If you would like your 4 to 12 year old children to be involved with these local sports activities....please see Mrs. Pam at the park.

Please remember Proctor Park is open to all the public. So long as people are being respectful of the park they are allowed to join us. Please report any interesting or non-appropriate things to Mrs. Pam or call 713-247-4400 (HPD Central Patrol Division) or 311 to get police assistance.
